JANUARY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Every month we honor one athlete to recognize as Athlete of the Month. This athlete is someone that our team selects that demonstrates dedication and commitment to our community and program, and holds to our values of doing things with integrity and humility, being inclusive, and hard-working. Our selected member as our 2024 January Athlete of the Month is CHAD TINSLEY!



HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?

About 10-months.

 

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO COME TO CROSSFIT? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?

I’ve always got a list of short-term goals for CrossFit to hit specific numbers and start RXing more workouts. Longer-term, I want to be fitter at 40 than I am at 35. We tend to overestimate what we can do in 5-years! My focus is remaining really consistent with attending classes and working on my mobility.

 

WHAT DOES CROSSFIT MEAN TO YOU?

CrossFit filled a gap in my life that’s been there since team sports ended for me (like 12-years ago). I had forgotten what it was like to train with a team! I love having a community to struggle alongside and succeed with. And there’s no better community than Kakou!

 

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENTS IN CROSSFIT?

My favorite and my best movements don’t necessarily align! My best movements are all the tall guy things (wall balls, rowing, box jumps, etc.). Favorites lately are bench press, deadlifts, and squats. It’s been fun to see big improvements on those over 10-months.

 

COACH JUST GAVE YOU CONTROL OVER SPOTIFY – WHAT'S YOUR WORKOUT SONG OF CHOICE?

Astronaut in the Ocean by Masked Wolf. My son, Liam (age 4), and I listened to that song in the car the first Saturday that I brought him to CrossFit. Now he requests it and it’s become our tradition to blast it on repeat every Saturday I bring him.

 

IF YOU COULD WRITE A WORKOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? FORMAT, REPS, LOAD, ETC.?

 Honestly, one of the things I like best about CrossFit is that I don’t have to do any programming! But if I had to choose…

HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?

CrossFit has improved my mobility, functional strength, energy, and mental health. There’s also a sense of pride in setting a positive example for my kid! It influenced us to have him start parkour and he’s looking forward to starting CrossFit Kids at Kakou when he’s old enough!


WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWBIE JOINING CROSSFIT KAKOU?

I think the idea of starting CrossFit can be intimidating. I would reassure someone that CrossFit can meet you where you’re at with all movements and that the Kakou community and the coaches make it incredibly welcoming!
