Every month we honor one athlete to recognize as Athlete of the Month. This athlete is someone that our team selects that demonstrates dedication and commitment to our community and program, and holds to our values of doing things with integrity and humility, being inclusive, and hard-working. Our selected member as our 2025 March Athlete of the Month is...
MARY KELLY ROSSOW!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?
11 years now and plan for at least another 11 more.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO COME TO CROSSFIT? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
Mental health is the key motivator. A long time ago I realized I have to work out nearly everyday to be a functioning sane human being in this world. I needed something interesting, constantly changing to accommodate my massive ADD, and wanted to simply have fun. My daily goals: Workout hard, do not injure myself, learn something new, laugh with fellow members.
WHAT DOES CROSSFIT MEAN TO YOU?
It means strength to any ability, community with others, and learning new things. I am so grateful Crossfit Kakou has been so welcoming. I simply am so thankful for the coaches and the fun encouraging members. This year, this has meant A LOT to me. I only joined in October and I am simply honored to be a part of this new family.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TYPES OF WORKOUTS IN CROSSFIT?
DUs, anything on the rig, and anything upside down.
COACH JUST GAVE YOU THE CONTROL FOR SPOTIFY – WHAT'S YOUR WORKOUT SONG OF CHOICE?
Old metal, AC/DC, Rush, Ozzy. Also beastie boys, INXS, Black Keys.
IF YOU COULD WRITE ANY WORKOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? FORMAT, REPS, LOAD, ETC.?
Oh totally a chipper!

HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
I kinda like being the freakishly strong old person outside of the gym. I can move lots of food boxes for the church food pantry, I can move the tires on/off from the garage walls, and I can open any type of jar imaginable.
But more seriously it has given me confidence, strength, and peace. I am sure it makes me a better person in this world.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWBIE JOINING CROSSFIT KAKOU?
Simply – just show up. There have been so many times when I am driving to the gym and just want to drive on passed it and so many wods I looked at and thought “hell no I don’t want to do that today”, and so many times I have cursed wallballs, thrusters, and front squat movements – but I still go. I always learn something new and love to suffer/laugh with other crazy people like me. And always remember – it’s just a workout.
